Forum Spam is in the Eye of the Beholder

SEMpdx is an “all volunteer” organization, and cleaning up comment and forum spam comes with the job. However, when these time sucking waste of pixel space comes from someone that is supposed to be “in the industry”, it really ticks me off.

Sifting through several hundred morning e-mails Thursday, I ran across two newly submitted forum posts awaiting approval. One was supposed to go in our Portland “local search marketing jobs” forum and one was slated for the SEM business forum.

SEMpdx Past President Kent Lewis Launches Formic Media (The Interview)

October 23rd, 2008 by Todd Mintz

SEMpdx Past President Kent Lewis gratefully agreed to answer some questions about his newest venture.

1) You have one successful search marketing agency…why start another one? What’s the relationship between Formic & Anvil?
Anvil Media provides search engine marketing (SEM) services to Fortune 1000 and equivalent clientele that have very specific and sophisticated SEM requirements. As much as we enjoy working with smaller businesses, Anvil is not structured to effectively help these companies. Rather than retool Anvil to help a broad spectrum of businesses, we felt it would be more appropriate to create, incubate and spin-off a separate SEM agency designed specifically to help small & local businesses.

How To F*** Up At Online Networking

October 21st, 2008 by Todd Mintz

As online networkers go, I definitely fall into the Ho/Sl*t category.  I will get LinkedIn / Facebook Friend / Twitter Follow with just about anybody who doesn’t spam me.  I deliberately choose this path because I believe that expanding my “sphere of influence” online is worth the time spent at these activities.

Last week, I received the following email via LinkedIn from a total stranger.

Hi,

Have Gun, Will Telecommute

“If you want a partner…Take my hand…Here I stand…I’m your man.”…Leonard Cohen

I’m not in the job market now.  I’m happily employed in my current position.

But what if I were?

First, I would craft a kick-ass resume and post it on my personal website.

Then, I would Twitter that I was looking for a new position.  My tweet would get pushed to Facebook, FriendFeed & many other places so a large number of people in my network would know that I am seeking employment.

We’re happy to announce the addition of a new benefit for SEMpdx members. Taking advantage of this one will pay for nearly half of your membership fee, and you don’t even have to leave town to use it!

There’s a new search marketing publication on the scene called Search Engine Marketing Journal, (or SEMJ for short), and it’s quite unique. For starters, there are no advertisements throughout the entire issue at all. Even the cover gets right to the point with the entire table of contents right there.
