The Doug Heil Movement

July 7th, 2008 by Todd Mintz

“I was looking at the black and white world…” Elvis Costello

I don’t know too much about Doug other than from his frequently critical blog comments where he shares his own fervent white hat evangelism. I think many in the SEO Community, especially the newer members, dismiss Doug out of hand…those that have been around long enough to remember when he was one of the better known people in the industry are more likely to pay attention and acknowledge his ideas without taking his criticisms too much to heart.

Crossing the Line at SMX Give It Up?

July 7th, 2008 by Scott Hendison

Last year this session was one of my favorites at the conference, and this year really was no exception.

Each of the presenters did an excellent job, but a lot of controversy seemed to be generated at each person’s interpretation of what was appropriate to offer the crowd.

How Sonics Fans Can Use Domaining To Exact Revenge On Clayton Bennett

July 3rd, 2008 by Todd Mintz

So, it looks like the Sonics are moving to Oklahoma City . Fortunately, Bennett agreed to leave Seattle the “Sonics” moniker in case Seattle can either get an expansion team or another team to relocate to Seattle . Bennett claims that the team doesn’t have a name yet. If that’s true, his group made a serious mistake…far more damaging than the “smoking gun” emails that came out during the court proceedings.

My Conversation With Matt Cutts At SMX Advanced

June 19th, 2008 by Todd Mintz

I had a nice chat with Matt Cutts at SMX Advanced. Not only is he a great guy but he is incredibly accessible for a person who has such a strong position of importance in our industry. I’m totally convinced that Matt would spend as much time with a search newbie as he would with a SEO “A” lister and if you happen to see Matt at a conference, don’t feel bashful in going up and introducing yourself.

SMX Advanced 2008 - Top 10 Nuggets of Knowledge

June 11th, 2008 by Scott Hendison

SMX Advanced in Seattle was held June 3rd and 4th, and just like last year, I thought it was an excellent show.

Even though I took copious notes, rather than recap all the sessions, which has already been done so well by many others, I thought I would blog about only the newest information I learned.

Yahoo to “Optimize” My Paid Placement Accounts? No Way!

June 5th, 2008 by Tracy Chapman

After being alerted about a paragraph in Yahoo’s new Terms and Conditions by my colleague Kent Lewis, I was in disbelief at what I was reading. Surely it was some kind of mistake, or they had not worded their intentions very well.

I couldn’t imagine they would actually think it would be OK to edit their advertisers campaigns without their approval and then only make an “effort” to reverse the changes if advertisers noticed and requested a reversal in writing. But it is actually true.

Your Google Portrait

May 28th, 2008 by Todd Mintz

“And I’ve seen it all, I’ve seen it all…Through the yellow windows of the evening train…” Tom Waits, 9th & Hennepin

In the Tom Waits song “9th & Hennepin”, the narrator looks out the window from his train seat and creates his own story from the images that he is seeing. His story is unique to him because though others might see the exact same scene, they will process the information differently and come up with their own unique portrait. However, Waits defines his landscape very starkly “…And the steam comes out of the grill like the whole goddamn town’s ready to blow…” that should slant each viewer’s perspective of the scene towards painting a picture of despair instead one of hope.

40 Days, 40 Nights, and 140 Characters Later (David Mihm’s Thoughts after a Month+ on Twitter)

May 22nd, 2008 by David Mihm

When Todd Mintz finally convinced me to join Twitter at last month’s SEMpdx event, I’ll admit: I still wasn’t fully convinced. I’d been to enough search conferences in the last two years to hear @dannysullivan (for the uninitiated, the @ symbol means even Danny’s now on Twitter, too) bash Twits’ pithy burps of “content” more than once. But, I decided, what the hell, I’ll use it for a few weeks & give up on it, just like I did with Instant Messenger after my freshman year of college.
